Artist Trading Cards

Artist Trading Cards are usually miniature works of art created on 2½ x 3½ inch or 64 X 89 mm card stock. They are originals, small editions and, most importantly, self-produced. Anybody can produce them. The idea is that you trade them with other people who produce cards, either at trading events or wherever you meet another ATC trader in person. It is important that you meet other people in person to trade. It is ok to trade by mail or to participate in editions but the main purpose of this activity is the trading and the personal meeting. It is not about money: participants in trading sessions and editions should not be charged any money: the point is the exchange of cards as well as the personal experience. M. Vänçi Stirnemann originated the idea in 1996, holding trading sessions in Zurich, Switzerland. In 1997, Stirnemann created 1200 cards by hand as part of an exhibit. On the last day, he invited others to create their own cards and trade with him during the closing reception. The movement took off, and today, there are ATC swaps in almost every major city around the world. There are also many online swaps.

You can make your own cards from any materials as long as they are the standard size of 2½" x 3½" or you may purchase the many varieties of pre-cut cards offered by WALSER'S including the offering from Strathmore Artists Papers below. Along with your original art on one side of the card, you should include your name, contact information and any desired information about the art and media.
